New Year in Russia

The holiday was started by Peter the Great in the 18th century.

New Year in Russia is the most favourite national holiday now.
People start preparation long before. They decorate trees, buy gifts, have parties at work and at school.

Ded Moroz (Father Frost) and his grandaughter bring gifts. Different fairy tales characters also take part at the parties.

We buy a lot of tasty things and cook much food.
The party begins at about 10 o'clock p.m.
We say good bye to the previous year and meet new one at the midnight.

After that people go to the street for fireworks, watch TV, have fun with guests.
Celebration lasts for several days. We visit relatives and friends, exchange gifts.
