Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that celebrates the landing of Christopher Columbus. The holiday is a way of honoring his achievements. Columbus Day is celebrated in October. The holiday is controversial because some people believe that Columbus was not a hero. This is because his achievements led to the deaths of many Native Americans. Also, Columbus did not really mean to land in the area that we now call America . Some people believe since it was an accident that he even came here, we do not need to celebrate him. However, Columbus Day is a federal holiday. It did not become a federal holiday until 1937.
