Edgewood Elementary School (USA)

Edgewood Elementary School serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. It is located on Edgewood Road, which is how it got its name. Edgewood is located in a suburb of Pennsylvania near Philadelphia and New Jersey. It is one of ten elementary schools in the Pennsbury School District. Our principal's name is Mrs. Spack.

Our school is fairly big. It is the biggest elementary school in our school district. We have between four and five classes per grade level. There are about 25 students in each class. Therefore, Edgewood has about 600 students. Each grade level has its own hallway and our first grade classes are in classrooms called modulars which are not attached to our regular school building. We had to add these modulars to our school because all of the other classrooms were full! Edgewood also has a great recess area with a lot of space for students to run around and play.

Besides all of the normal subjects that we have to study (math, language arts, social studies, and science, we also have special area classes like music, library, computers, physical education, and art. Every student participates in all of those classes. But, Edgewood also has some optional activities like music lessons if you want to learn an instrument or special clubs that meet after school. Also, every fifth grader is part of the chorus and learns how to sing certain songs for our winter and spring concerts. Students in fifth grade also take DARE which teaches us about resisting drugs, alcohol, and bullying and is taught by a Yardley police officer.

Edgewood is a great school that does a lot for its community. We raise money for many different charities and help feed less fortunate families during the holidays. Students at Edgewood also compete in different challenges if they want to get involved. They can be a part of Reading Olympics, 24 Math Challenge, Logic Club, or Odyssey of the Mind. We are all so happy that we get to go to such a great elementary school! Next year, we will head to Charles Boehm Middle School and meet new students from a couple of the other Elementary Schools in our school district.

Helping focus

In Edgewood we love donating food. So when there is an announcement that we are going to start a food drive, we try to donate as much food as we can. There is a big table where all of the food we donated goes and a lot of the food has to be piled up on top of each other. Even some have to go on the floor! This year we donated 2,000 pounds of food which equals a whole ton! This is just one of the many ways families at Edgewood donate for a good cause.

Our school loves donating to Baby Bundles. What we do is we donate small things like clothes, baby bottles, bibs, and many other things to less fortunate families that need help providing items for their babies. Who doesn't care about babies? That's why every year we donate many items. Each grade is assigned to different items and we each go and buy them by a certain date. It makes us happy knowing that we donated something to babies who need help.

For Red Ribbon Week we say NO to drugs! Everyone in Edgewood gets a red ribbon bracelet that says, “Red Ribbon Week” on it. Some police officers come to our building to talk about drugs and how we should always avoid them. That's how we celebrate Red Ribbon Week.

Edgewood loves taking a break and walking for our Walk-A-Thon. We walk for autism. Everybody gets a bracelet and a ribbon. The ribbon has different colored puzzle pieces. Every classroom has its own poster with puzzle pieces that each student decorated and put their name on. For the Walk-A-Thon each grade walks at a different time, and we walk outside for about 45 minutes. That's how Edgewood celebrates the Walk-A-Thon.

When it's time for Thanksgiving, do you know what Edgewood Elementary School does? We spend one week collecting food. For example:
Day
1- Turkey & Ham

Day 2- Appetizers

Day 3-Sides

Day 4- Drinks

Day 5- Desserts

These donations then get turned into full Thanksgiving meals for families that can't afford all of the foods that we like to eat on this holiday. This is just one way we help our community!

During the holiday time we do a 'Holiday Tree.' This is when, if you choose, you send in a toy for someone in need. This is a little different from 'Toys For Tots' because in Toys For Tots you bring in as many toys as you want, but, with the “Holiday Tree” you bring in one designated toy. At Edgewood we do both of these to help during the holiday season.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is probably our biggest fundraiser this year. We did two things during the year, one was pasta for pennies which is where we bring in money to donate to Leukemia and Lymphoma. Whichever class brings the most money gets to go to the Olive Garden (an Italian restaurant). The other thing we do is a Bingo game. Together they raise a lot of money for Leukemia and Lymphoma.
